Comparison

Shopify vs Webflow

Both score 5 for room to grow and get there differently — one by handling tax, shipping and stock, the other by giving you the markup and exporting it.

These two rarely appear on the same shortlist and probably should. Shopify scores 5 for room to grow and Webflow scores 5 as well, which is the only pair in this wave where that is true, and they earn it in completely different ways.

Two products with room to grow

Shopify's headroom is operational. Tax, shipping and inventory are handled properly rather than approximated, and the app market covers trades the core product does not. That is the kind of ceiling that matters when you are shipping to three countries.

Webflow's headroom is structural. Any layout that could be hand-built is reachable, Collections generate pages from a shape defined once, and the code can be exported and taken elsewhere. That is the kind of ceiling that matters when the site is large and the design is not negotiable.

Webflow scores 5 for design against Shopify's 3. Shopify scores 4 for ease against Webflow's 2, and Webflow competence takes weeks rather than an afternoon.

Who handles tax and shipping

Nobody, if you choose Webflow and are selling more than a handful of things. Webflow has commerce, but the tax, shipping and inventory machinery is Shopify's argument and it is not close.

Against that, Shopify's design ceiling is real and its costs have two edges people miss: the promotional starting rate rises steeply once it ends, and using an outside payment processor adds a percentage to every order.

Webflow's cost problem is different in shape. Site plans, workspace plans and add-ons stack into one bill, and the entry price tells you about none of the others — the number you compare against Shopify's is rarely the number you end up paying.

Both export, so neither traps the work. Shopify scores 4 for support against Webflow's 3, staffed around the clock, where Webflow expects you to have somebody who knows what they are doing.

Which should you choose?

Choose Shopify if you are running a shop and want the tax, shipping and stock handled by somebody whose job that is.

Choose Webflow if the site is the product — a large marketing site, a portfolio, a publication — and either you sell very little or you will connect a commerce service to it later.
